Why don’t wolves bark?
Ah, but they do !! Although wolves bark relatively less than domesticated dogs they can and do. An intruder or danger can provoke a bark but wolves more often give a low breathy bark. The kind you might hear from your own dog as he is assessing a situation. Wolves have been know to bark more once in captivity. As domestic dog live in ‘captivity’ I wonder is this a reason they bark more? One theory is that man has encouraged barking in the domestic animal as a means of alert and it has stuck.
Basenji’s do not bark. The reason for this is because their vocal folds are shaped differently to other breeds.
Nikko (photographed here) mentioned that her great, great, great grandpappy may have known some wolves.
