Running with your pal
Thinking about pounding the pavement with your dog by your side? A few things to remember with the new exercise regime.
Apart from your own fitness, what is the current fitness level of your dog and is he overweight? Chat with your vet about how to plan, especially if joint problems could be a factor. A speed most suited will probably be where your dog is walking or trotting. Make it a pleasure, not boot camp, and check the length of your dogs nails. Too long can be affect your dog’s gait and cause pain.
Please consider the season, time of day and the heat of the path or roadway surface. Dogs need water handy just like people do. If your dog is going to be running beside a bicycle there are a few products available which are safer than carrying the leash in your hand.
Whether running or bicycling, be aware that the faster you travel the less safe for the both of you.
As you are doing your cool down stretches take the time to examine fidos pads and paws for wear and tear. Exercise requirements of puppies differ greatly from adult dogs and your vet can guide you on how much exercise is appropriate.
