Your Local Dog Ally
If you use social media, it is really worth investigating any local neighbourhood pages. I recently received an invitation for a local facebook page and I’m amazed at the speed and the willingness of help when it comes to dogs.
Since joining only a few months ago I have seen approximately 20 separate incidents where animals (mostly dogs) are either reported missing or found. If you can access the page on your smartphone you can even check every few minutes for any relevant updates.
One of the busiest times is when there are storms on. You can guarantee within a few hours pics start appearing. The best bet is to have clear identification on your pets collar but sometimes a tag and or collar may fall off. Of the animals appearing on our local site around 90% have been reunited with their owners and it’s not always someone directly using the site needing help. Often it goes like this…
Anyone know an owner missing a gold female dog?
I know someone, give me a minute and I’ll call them.
Wow, yes their dog’s been gone about an hour, missing from ( ) Road.
Then phone numbers might be exchanged in private. There is usually a full description of the animal requested before giving an address to collect, also in private.
Of course using social media does not replace the need to report a dog missing or found to the appropriate bodies such as vet, council and R.S.P.C.A. However it can be a friendly ally when it comes to pet detection, especially if a pet needs identifying on a Sunday when many Council depots and Vet Clinics are closed. Always use discretion when sharing information on social media.
