Working dogs in NZ
Footrot flats featured a black and white border collie and after a trip to New Zealand you can why this animal is so iconic. Ninety percent of working dogs we spotted were just that! This breed being one of the most important in a land of around 60 million sheep and around 3 million people.
Breed aside, working sheep dogs may have specific duties. ‘Heading’ is used to describe a quiet dog which can cast a wide circle gradually bringing the herd in towards his/her master. This type of dog can also be used close by at lambing time. He knows how to keep a close watch and can keep watch to make sure they don’t escape.
A ‘Huntaway’ is more vocal and prefers to chase. His noise and temperament is better suited to forcing the sheep through a particular area or generally clearing a space. This guy is often black and tan in colour so he doesn’t have to be a border collie. He is usually a combination of breeds to make up his suitability. He also needs to know how to be quiet on request.
A ‘Handy’ dog has traits of both and is a great all-rounder.
Others can be used as a ‘Leader’ which is suited to working up the front of the flock and a‘Stopping’ dog the rogue, wild or difficult sheep.
