Scowls and Growls
Generally it is the front portion of a dog we observe for the most obvious signs of trouble between dogs. A relaxed dog generally displays a soft or open mouth. Tense jowls or two dogs locked in a stare at one another is a sign that distance should be maintained. If you come into contact with dogs at any level, please become familiar with canine body language. You might find it’s easier to know what dogs are thinking than what people are thinking. Some dogs are quite vocal during play and this may include growling. You need to know their style very well.
Dogs do not necessarily growl prior to delivering a bite. However, if your dog growls to show that they are not feeling comfortable and you fail to address that situation immediately by creating distance or a barrier between them and the stimulus, they may feel the need to take the situation a step further. Also if dogs are roused on for growling they may choose to leave that part out go straight to a bite one day.
