Which Dog Breed?
Are you (or someone you know) deciding which breed of dog would suit you best? Why not attend a dog show and speak to folks about the characteristics of their dogs. This way you can find many kinds in one place. Choose carefully as it is likely you will have your dog between 8 and 18 years. Breeders should be raising pups with consideration to their critical stage development before they are released to owners. And you can ‘Meet the parents’.
You can give a fabulous dog a second chance in life when buying from a shelter. Dogs rehomed in this way usually have to pass testing to deem whether they are safe to be sold on to a new family. Your fee covers vaccination and care whilst at the shelter and tends to discourages not-so-serious owners. Mixed breeds can make wonderful pets and often live a long time. Find out as much about the dogs history as possible. If you have an existing dog at home it is likely you will need to bring it with you by appointment once you have selected your new dog.
I recommend the height of investigation if buying a puppy from a pet shop as some are supplied by puppy mills. Also, in confined spaces for long periods, pups often poop and wee in the same place they eat which may result in toilet training difficulties down the track. Pet shops doing the right thing will be able to provide evidence of their procedures.
