The Dogs Nose that Knows

With a brain a tenth the size of a human’s, the section responsible for smell is 40 times larger than ours.  So next time your dog insists on smelling anything don’t be too annoyed as it’s simply his way of interpreting ‘OK, so now I know what that is’.  He’s merely doing with his nose what we usually do with our eyes.

 

As a puppy your dog will be developing and using his sense of smell first, before his eyes and ears have opened.  What he picks up with his nose gives him more of a story than just a scent.

The stunning design allows him to detect where fingers have touched an item a week earlier, find a submerged body in the water and even detect the scent of lung or breast cancer in a patient’s breath.

 

He can move his nostrils independently and purpose for your dog having a wet nose is so that he can determine which direction a smell is coming from.
