Sniffin Dog
A dog’s nose is nothing to scoff at. This incredible tool is a highly tuned machine. Smell is as valuable to a dog as vision is for us. The smells of his world provide more than just a map. When he smells another dogs rear end or urine there are valuable clues such as gender, gestation and what they’ve been eating. And if another dog has rubbed up against us they leave information on our skin and clothes.
When he is born smell is the first sense with which he investigates the world. The part of brain used for smell is 40 times greater than humans even though the size of his brain is 90% smaller than ours.
One analogy is that… if us humans can detect the aroma of a casserole, a dog would be able to detect the aroma of every individual ingredient.
When your dog is hot he can pant to help cool down. In addition he is able to reduce his sense of smell whilst cool air moving through his nose is helping to cool down as well. The damp of his nose helps him to fine tune smell but what happens if (forbid) his nose is a little dry which reduces the capacity of smell? He licks it of course and then he’s back on track.
