Do you have dog patience?
I read a recent article by the Dog Whisperer talking about how much patience you need as a parent and how much strength and control you need to draw on at times. He then went on to draw a parallel in the way that we should treat our dogs with patience. I thoroughly agree. I don’t see the value in exploding when your dog does something wrong.
You can still be firm and consistent without striking fear into those subjected to your attention. Do you think you would like to work for someone who treats you like are in the army? (If you are already in the army, I think you’ll know what I’m talking about). What is more important to you out of being able to pull your dog into line or having your dog like you and ‘want’ to be with you? I don’t believe one needs to be accomplished at the expense of the other.
Fear of you or the outcome only teaches him to mind you, the outcome or getting caught. It will not teach him to make the right choice because he wants to.
At the opposing end of the scale can be a person who a real ‘softy’ with their dog but are not providing fun and stimulation. Life for this dog can be plain old boring but I guarantee he will seek ways to entertain himself although you may not like them.
Achieving a balance with your dogs’ lifestyle and his behaviour takes time and patience. Deliver guidance as if you were guiding your own child.
