Pregnant Police Dog gives birth to the ‘P’ litter
When most people hear the name ‘Xena’ they think of the warrior princess. PD Xena of the Queensland Police Service is no princess but she has plenty of ‘warrior’. She’s a working dog but now she’s been called to the duty of motherhood. She recently delivered 8 healthy pups known as the ‘P’ litter because all their names begin with the letter P. The litter is made up of three males and five females. There’s Pistol, Punch, Phate, Pepper, Prada, Pearl, Pammy and Phoenix.
Xena is Queensland’s first police dog to give birth. The pups were fathered by PD Reko. He is also a working dog and he has proven his special skills by tracking down an offender earlier this year in Kenilworth.
It will be a little while before the ‘P’ litter are tracking or apprehending offenders so for now they just need a little fun and T.L.C. These gorgeous balls of fluff are more concerned with playtime or finding a rubber thong to sink their teeth into. Their socialization will begin before they can graduate. Pups spend around 14-16 months with foster parents whilst learning their early social skills. They will also have exposure to streets, traffic and a number of noisy and crowded environments such as train stations and shopping centres. The pups’ formal training begins when they are assigned to a handler and farewell their foster homes.
There are currently approximately 75 dogs in the Queensland Police Dog Squad. Their canine senses, drives and abilities are fine tuned and utilised for work. They build formidable partnerships with their handlers. Some individual canines are more suited to detection, tracking or general purpose dogs and perform a wide variety of tasks at work.
‘Paw Enforcement’ here they come.
