In honour of a dog
When someone loses a pet it’s hard not to talk about the time you lost yours or how your old ‘Miffy’ had cancer too. It’s not that you can’t mention it but be careful not to appear to be minimizing the person’s grief. This also goes for the age of the dog which has passed away. On the scale of heartaches it is extremely painful to lose a pet regardless of the pets age. And just because a pet lives well into his twilight years his loss is just as important. If this is the case, the owner will feel his absence for a very long time.
Talk about their pet. “Remember the time….” Ask if there’s anything you can do to help them out. Consider making a donation in the name of their late pet, perhaps to a shelter or an organization which helps animals.
If you find your friend in a deep state of sadness and you’re stuck for words, you don’t need to fill up the silence with chit chat. Sometimes a silent hug can speak volumes.
