If you were a dog…
Would you understand human language or would you need to be patiently taught what commands mean through guidance and repetition? Would you automatically know that it’s ok to chew a kong but not Dads shoes?
Lets think about praise for a moment. It goes such a long with way with dogs as well as children. And partner’s too. A dog may lie quietly for the good part of an evening without us saying a thing to him but the moment he starts to play up, oh boy does that get our attention. Most dogs are being good most of the time. If he mainly get’s the attention when he’s doing something you don’t like, guess what!!
Remember to recognize this and praise your dog at the times when he is doing something desirable e.g. sitting or lying quietly or generally acting polite. Doing this makes it very easy for your dog to repeat behaviours that please you.
