Anzac dogs
Dogs of war were used as messengers carrying a message from one place to another. They detected gas and tripwires, listened for planes, watched over equipment and tracked the enemy at lightning speeds.
A tracker and his dog usually went ahead until a trail was detected. The dog would stop and indicate the find using a signal like facing or pointing. Many bunkers which would have otherwise gone unnoticed, were located this way. Dogs were again used in battle at Vietnam however the army policy did not allow dogs to return to Australia or New Zealand and so, their team and handlers had to leave them behind.
Alexandra Headland at the Sunshine Coast boasts The Australian War Dog Memorial to remind us of the important contribution dogs made in war. A drinking trough for dogs and a statue marks the spot.
