Why your dog food should ‘not’ contain Ethoxyquin
An article recently shared with us brought to light an ingredient commonly used in pet food called Ethoxyquin. It’s purpose of use in dog food, is (directly or indirectly) as a preservative however as the article points out, Ethoxyquin is not always required to be listed on the ingredient labelling. If for e.g. it was used to preserve a ‘by-product’ such as fat, because it was not in fact the manufacturer at the end of the line who added it, Ethoxyquin would not have to appear on the final ingredient labelling.
Ethoxyquin is unaccepted for use in human foods but low doses are permitted in some brands of spices such as paprika and chilli powder. We are not privy to a complete study on the effects of consumption of Ethoxyquin in canines but would invite you to do some reading on how preservatives could affect your dog and whether you think the facts are substantial enough to avoid them completely.
Ethoxyquin is also used as a preservative for rubber, an antioxidant for grain and is promoted as being a cheaper form of preservative than those permitted for use in human food. You’d be hard pressed to find it in listed in dog food in Australia’, but our intention is not to confuse… we found the article interesting and we invite folks to investigate the products they feed their dog including any preservatives or colours they contain. Please read ingredients carefully and if you believe that such ingredients cause damage to a dog’s well-being you might like to support dog food manufacturers such as ‘The Complete Pet Company’ who offer products free from any preservatives and colours. You’ll also have peace of mind knowing their products only contain what appears on the ingredient labelling.
