A Special kind of Wolf
Romeo is a very special wolf who won the hearts of many Alaskan folks. In 2003 Romeo appeared to the people of Juneau and became a somewhat celebrity over the next few years. Jet black, enormous (as wolves are) and handsome as heck he did something quite extraordinary. He allowed humans to come in close proximity and he also made friends with some domesticated dogs, a yellow lab in particular. This is almost unheard of in the wolf world.
Nick Jans seemed to be the first to notice Romeo and was in no hurry to let others know about him (for Romeo’s safety of course).
Mr. Jans has written a beautiful book ‘A Wolf called Romeo’ about this story and cover is graced with a magnificent photograph of the wolf and his Labrador meeting face to face. Where he came from people have very mixed opinions about wolves. A debate began about whether romeo should be relocated. What I didn’t realize is the briefness of time the average wolf lives, just 3 years.
