Whose Turn to Walk the Dog?
Probably yours. Am I trying to send you on a guilt trip? Not at all, just trying to inspire. Although it may begin as a shared arrangement, one person needs to take responsibility and see to it that the dog gets his/her stimulation with a walk. It needn’t be a break-neck pace and it can even be a stroll but it has to happen.
How often?
Every day for a minimum of 45mins is the recommended dose. This could be in one go or broken up into a morning and afternoon session. Just as we can feel a little ‘house-bound’ when we don’t get to go out, so does your dog but more intensely. If your dog appears to be ‘impossible to walk’ it’s time to seek out a trainer or some training material now. There is no shortage of encouraging help.
It is a myth that if you have a big yard you don’t need to walk the dog. It’s about stimulation as well as the exercise and the walk is just perfect for this. Dogs benefit when they can see and smell different things every day. Many owners report a reduction in destructive dog behaviours simply by increasing the amount of activity.
