When do dogs want to be petted?
Ask 10 people this question and get 10 different answers. Sometimes we also take it for granted that because we know our own dogs so well that we automatically know what they want. I mean sure, you have developed a routine that works around your dog’s food, exercise and rest but I’m talking about touch.
The short answer is… when they consent.
How do know if they’ve consented?
Easy, they ask for more.
Even the friendliest dogs do not want to be petted by us all the time. We often go into their space. We know they generally enjoy being petted and we enjoy it so much we just do it without considering whether they want it or not.
It’s best to invite them to you. If you initiate touch and they don’t give you the ‘I want more’ signals then stop. I love human touch too but that does not mean that I want to be touched all of the time.
Start the interaction and within a few seconds stop the interaction. If your dog does not try to re-start it then it doesn’t want it. Simple.
Please take the time to learn their language.
Especially if you have children I would recommend having a nominated place e.g. dog bed where your dog can voluntarily go for some peace. Explain the importance of this place (where humans don’t approach) to the family.
