Vale Dr. Sophia Lin
I would like to take a moment to reflect on the generous and meaningful life of the late Dr. Sophia Lin. For those of you who don’t know of her, Dr. Lin was an animal behaviourist dedicated to reducing fear and stress of dogs being handled in a veterinary, hospital or shelter setting. She is the author of several books and has a multitude of you tube videos to help others help animals.
She recognized early in her veterinary experience that too many animals were dying because of behaviour problems and went about fixing that. Her philosophy was that dog owners need to be the leader in a dance. Directing the dog with their body – speed, posture etc. If you give the correct signals the dog does not get confused or decide to lead themselves.
Recently Dr. Lin tragically ended her own life and she is deeply missed by many. Medical professionals are often at high risk because of the intense pressure on them. I also imagine it must be so difficult to witness the neglect others have imposed on animals. Vets go into their field because they love animals and are often left ‘cleaning up the mess.’
Dr. Lin, you were a truly remarkable woman. We will remember you and admire the passionate work you did for the sake of animal-kind and our relationships with our dogs.
