The Vet Said…
I asked our local vet what were the two most important things they wish their clients would do with their dogs to make a vet’s job easier.
Here’s the lowdown…
Socialise your dog from a young age with a variety of dogs and people. Getting your dog used to others will make your life so much easier. This will help when various people need to handle your dog and will also help prevent him from getting into trouble in the first place. Training and desensitizing will help your dog to lead a happier life. An animal who will tolerate being examined with the inclusion of gentle restraint is going to be better at the vet clinic. And obedience training is important too. So that you can quickly move the dog into a position without having to wrestle him there.
Give your dog the skills to cope ie with a range of situations so that he can move more confidently through the world. This is an extension of the first suggestion. Dogs exposed to a number of sounds, sights and environments are less likely to spike into overload when in a new situations. They need to be a healthy weight and exercised regularly to help avoid pent up energy manifesting in other ways e.g. anxiety or aggression. And don’t forget training again because not as many folks continue walking a dog who’s crazy on the leash.
