Sniffin’ Dog Breeds
Bloodhound – These guys are just built for it, they’ve got the nose that knows. It is due to having more scent receptors than any other breed. Their long ears tend to scoop up the air which is handy as they can also ‘air scent’. Other breeds in no particular order are…
Beagle – This breed of dog tend to let their nose guide them, sometimes even whilst we’re calling them back to us. Regularly sighted at the airport terminal.
Labrador Retriever – Wonderful detection breed. Has even been known to accurately detect cancer on a persons breath.
English Springer Spaniel – This guy can find explosives and cadavers amongst other things.
German Shepherd – Commonly found working with search and rescue and a loyal friend to the army and police.
Harrier – For generations, a hunting dog and an expert tracker.
Dachshund – Their ‘low to the ground’ profile gives them an advantage and they can also detect things underground.
English Foxhound – Ok, we’ve all seen this one in the movies. Not a favourite among foxes.
Scottish Terrier – This bonnie wee lad is relentless with small prey and will dig to get it
Basset Hounds – …love to follow a scent. Their strong hunting capacity doesn’t always reflect hush puppy looks.
Of course this is only a snapshot and many other breeds have a nose talent. Do you have a remarkable ‘sniffy’ story about your dog you’d like to share?
