Small dog, Big choice
I was asked today what kind of small breed is a good dog to get? A few came to mind that I happily suggested to investigate but it’s not as simple as that. It totally depends (as with large breeds) on what type of lifestyle you have and how you wish to interact with your dog. I mentioned a few different breeds I love and which keep appearing with happy stories from owners but I had to stress that when considering breeds you need to look into their make up. Do you prefer a dog which is going to snuggle up with you on the couch or one that is more independent. How much and what type of exercise can you deliver? Do you have any existing pets in the equation?
I ask people to look deep into what a breed was bred to do because certain traits can be hard to erase if they are hardwired in. And in saying that, they are better off celebrated or utilized rather than suppressed. If you have a mixed breed you’ll be looking at a number of traits. And then even within the breed you still have your individual personalities. Try to nurture nature by working with it rather than against and if you can and talk to the people that own them. Is this their first or their fifth? Ask them for the dog-honest nitty gritty. You might even consider fostering with view to adopt.
