Do you Know the Many Qualities of the Basenji?
This dog’s evolutionary traits show she evolved in a warm climate (including her short coat which feels kind of bristly by the way.) She is one of the oldest domestic breeds and originated in Africa. The basenji was used mostly to chase smaller game for hunters and to control rodents. Being a quiet dog was an advantage. She could bark once to alert and then remain silent.
She prefers to howl to vocalize, sometimes referred to by owners as the Basenji yodel. She is also capable of growling, whining and ‘screaming’.
Images of Basenjis have been found in ancient Egyptian tombs so the breed is very old with evidence of her presence as far back as 4000 BCE. The Egyptians were said to love her ‘cat-like’ personality.
Most owners agree that her total lack of doggie body odour is a big plus. They are fastidiously clean and shed little to no hair. Basenjis mostly enjoy the company of other Basenji’s and in fighting amongst a small group of them are very rare indeed. As for human company, they tend to bond with just one or two individuals.
They do fall under the ‘more difficult to train’ category but that is definitely not through lack of intelligence. They are just a little stubborn that’s all. Their demeanor is quite independent and you may find their willfulness challenging your patience or rethinking your approach.
She will reward your sense of humour with her antics but be sure to have a well-secured area for her to roam as she is a remarkable escape artist.
This beautiful canine is incredibly tough, has super hunting ability and an arresting stare, which feels almost penetrating. Many breeds rely more on sight or smell to find prey but the basenji uses both. Speed is easy for her and she displays a double suspension gallop like greyhounds and whippets.
She doesn’t enjoy going out at night or cold climates. She will however, thoroughly enjoy the affection and attention you give her and return it to you.
As with all breeds, folks should do their homework to find out if a breed is suitable for them and what they can expect from a particular breed. Failure to do this can often end in disappointment for dog and owner.
