Pets for the Elderly
Providing care for the older members of our community can often be a complicated task. You have to work out who will care for them, and how. Pets are great for providing unbiased company, a friendly ear and someone to hug. But what pet is suitable?
I think it’s really important for the elderly to have the company of a pet, as it’s been scientifically proven to be beneficial for good physical & mental health. Elderly people have the time for pets and have lots of love to give them but many are in town house or units, retirement villages or hospice accommodation and unfortunately pets are very often not encouraged. Are there any answers to this? You bet!
Small Dogs
What about dogs? While small lap dogs can cope with living totally inside, most people find dogs difficult to manage without a small courtyard or garden. If you have an adequte place for a dog to use as a toilet, and can exercise it one or two times a day, by taking it for a walk, a dog like a Chihuahua, Fox Terrier or a Poodle may be a consideration. Some open-minded & forward thinking nursing homes and the like, have a resident dog or cat, that always proves popular amongst its guests.
Cats
You may find in some cases, that a cat is a better alternative. Rag Doll and Persian cats are more sedate and quiet than other cats and generally cope well to being in a house or unit.
Cats are very clean and will usually use a litter tray. To reduce odour, you can buy a ‘hooded’ litter tray with a cover that looks like a hutch. Buying a scratching post and a variety of cat toys, including a Kong Ball, to ensure you have stimulation for the car. It’s important to spend time bonding with your cat. Also play with your cat and give it things to climb on and hide behind, too. I’ll provide some more idea’s on Pet’s for the Elderly next time.
