Our Doggy Pals
I doubt when our descendants began tossing the occasional scrap to wolves around 30,000 years ago, they could imagine how far the relationship would come by today. But did it happen this way? Did they meet on the ‘big game hunting’ scene and develop an affiliation or did cavemen adopt wolf pups and begin to shape them?
Humans and wolves were both hunting successfully without one another. Did we begin to tolerate only those which appeared more friendly or curious? One thing that definitely happened in this relationship is that dogs began to be able to read us. They’ve been described as psychic, intuitive and the like. Perhaps what they are exceptional at is being able to read human gestures.
And even though one dog may be large with spots and another may be small and fluffy dogs are more closely related than their looks would suggest. The majority of breeds developed by man have occurred in the last 150 years. Fossils point to the wolf as the first line of dogs as we know it with differences branching out from there as opposed to a dogs going feral and turning wolf.
