Is your dog staring at you?
Or is it only ever when you’re about to pop food in your mouth? If you are lucky enough to have a dog that is focused on you and in particular one who is good at eye contact, holler hip hooray. We’re not talking threatening stare here but a ‘you’ve got my attention’ stare. Perhaps you have put in some conditioning with him to look at you. Dogs look to us with curiosity but also for direction and they are better at reading our faces that we give them credit for.
Ever just ‘looked’ at your dog and he comes on over? Perhaps you thought ‘hey, I didn’t call you over’. But in his doggy language you did so please don’t rouse on him. He may be waiting for the next direction or activity. Maybe he looks at you and ‘you’ are the one who starts offering ‘him’ things in an attempt to know what he’s thinking.
When your dog is looking at you he is engaged. If your dog is looking at the group of seagulls moving closer to your picnic while you’re still trying to have a conversation with him, you don’t even have a dial tone. If saying his name hasn’t got his attention you may have to touch him as a reminder you still exist.
Get to know his habits and needs. If he can’t stop staring at you, though he may adore you, he may simply need to go outside.
