Is that an Irish Wolfhound’s Eyes Smiling?
One thing is for sure… this breed is one of the world’s tallest domestic dogs that may achieve 7ft whilst standing on their back legs. Being a gigantic breed even thought he only has a medium energy level he requires a lot of space and is not suited to apartment living.
Sturdy and swift this guy is a ‘sight hound’ and the ancients used him as a hunting dog, also suited to guarding and protecting stock. He was the only breed fast enough and strong enough to bring down a wolf. He was also used in war to drag men off horses and commonly played the role of a companion to the regal or noble. We prefer to picture one lazing beside a castle’s large blazing fireplace.
You may recognize his signature grey shaggy coat and bearded face. Due to his temperament and potential size, training as a pup should begin quickly. The breed as we know it today carries genes from breeds such as the Scottish deerhound, Borzoi, English Mastiff, Great Dane and generally lives between 6-8 years. If you are considering adding an Irish Wolfhound to your family, make sure your house, yard and car are big enough.
