In Search of Real Dog Food 9
The concept of fasting your dog is discussed in ‘Real food for dogs & cats – a practical guide to feeding your pet a balanced, natural diet’ by Dr. Clare Middle.
“It takes between about eighteen and thirty hours for the dog’s stomach, intestines and bowel to empty.”
Just as the dog’s digestion behaves optimally when the stomach is engorged, your dog also benefits having a completely empty digestive tract on a regular basis. In fact, feeding your dog six out of seven days is completely acceptable (provided it is on a raw meat diet) and the gut has a chance to cleanse itself whilst emptying. Dr. Middle explains why fasting is not cruel and describes the science of how it is beneficial for your dog.
“Not only does the liver totally cleanse the body of toxins, it burns excess fat, so the dog can hunt even more effectively. Its senses are also more acute when detoxified.”
If fasting causes stress to pet or owner then it isn’t essential.
