In Search of Real Dog Food 7
Our seventh segment from ‘Real food for dogs & cats – a practical guide to feeding your pet a balanced, natural diet’ by Dr. Clare Middle. We do hope that what we’ve shared so far whets your appetite for this fascinating book.
Dr. Middle explains that a dogs diet needn’t be entirely void of carbohydrates, and does discuss circumstances around what amounts are suitable. But the choice of high quality, low carb’ commercial brands of dog food available containing quality grain is slim. Dried food digests at about pH 3 which is then too alkaline for raw meat, bone and many nutrients to be digested fully, whereas the optimum is pH 1 to 2 which happens with raw meat/bone in the stomach. She reminds us that bloat is less likely in dogs adjusted to her recommended eating plan, and…
“Grains and cereals and dried or kibbled dog food, and tinned meat containing cereal, are therefore not good foods to be fed in large quantities to a dog, as they may hinder the correct digestive processes in the dog’s stomach. The 3-5% carbohydrate of a balanced natural diet is far more appropriate for dog physiology.”
