How do I know if another dog is going to be friendly and social with my dog?
This is a question we get asked all the time, and in short, you don’t always know for certain. Dogs can be hard to read if you’re not confident in body language it can be overwhelming. Subtle things can change the dynamics between 2 dogs that don’t know each other and are just meeting for the first time.
Basically, as a general rule, positive signs to look for are wagging tails, play bows, relaxed bodies and no growling or snarling. We encourage people to talk to the owner of the other dog and ask if it is safe for the 2 dogs to interact and if their dog is well socialised. This is especially important before entering a doggy off-leash park. Always observe the other dogs in the off-leash area before making a decision that it is safe to enter and allowing close play. Walking with leads, meeting dogs you know and watching for problems in advance can really help reduce unwanted interactions between dogs.
Also, it is so important that you socialise puppies so they become well socialised adult dogs, so get the training & socialising in from an early age. There is nothing more important than this. Puppy preschools are a great option and obedience clubs/agility etc. Off-leash parks are a good idea but only with people and dogs you know and trust though. Regular play dates with your friend’s dogs are another great way to socialise your dog. Outdoor doggy day Care on a regular basis is just another way to ensure your dog is ready to be a social butterfly, and all with the peace of mind of knowing your dog is attending with a regular small group of well socialised dogs and in the company of expert dog trainers.
