Hot Steamin’ Dog
Dogs like humans can experience heat stroke. They are less efficient at releasing heat because they are built to conserve heat.
His only sweat glands are in the pads of his feet (and some on his nose). The remainder of your dogs cooling has to occur through panting. Breeds with shorter noses and flatter faces like boxers and pugs pant with less efficiency than their long nosed friends so caution must be used, especially if using a muzzle in hot weather.
We know that leaving a dog in a hot, parked car can mean death in minutes. At the height of summer look to the cooler ends of the day for walking rover. Consider hot surfaces too please. Place your hand on the path, sand or bitumen and leave it there for 30 seconds. If this is uncomfortable for your hand it will be uncomfortable for your dog. The surface itself can harm paws and your dogs body will heat up faster because it is closer to the ground.
Always provide shade and adequate fresh water.
