Dog’s and Boats – “Aye Aye Captain “
If your dog is going to accompany you on a boat I recommend introducing the vessel and all of its noises to him gradually. It may take several weeks to prepare him. In the water your dog needs to know how to swim to a ladder or platform. Once he is comfortable in the water and on the boat wearing his floatation device, you can think about casting off. Make it a short trip to begin.
He needs to know how to –
Stay
Sit
Down
Get on the boat
Get off the boat
Do his business
I recommend a canine personal flotation device (PFD), regardless of his swimming ability.
The style with a handle at the top will help you to help him swiftly.
Remove hazardous or dangerous chemicals out of his reach and see if certain areas need some non-slip matting. Find a product for him to ‘toilet’ on and get him used to using it on land first.
Please make sure your dog only alights the boat either on the water or dock with your permission.
