Dog Training – The Recall
PROBEM SOLVING with the Recall
*If your dog is not co-operating, you may try and use a lead to reel him in & treat each time.
NEXT:
*When your dog is on the other side of the room, say his name to get his
attention.
*Once you have his attention, say COME
*When he does, say your bridge or marker word YES and give him the treat
*If he doesnt come, dont repeat it – hes missed his chance for a treat
*REMEBER you’re not training your dog to only come back after you’ve shouted
it 6 or 7 times
*Go back to the previous steps and start again (much slower)
NEXT: now its time to get your family/friends involved (PING PONG RECALLS)
*Get your dogs attention (say his name): then say “COME” and give him his
reward.
*Then get someone else to call him over and give him a reward (if he comes)
*keep the distance between you small at first & increase as you go.
*Practice, Practice, Practice
*make it FUN for your dog
NEXT: (Random Rewards)
*Once hes doing this, get him to go backwards & forwards between you 3/4 times before he gets his reward.
NEXT: Now its time to venture outside, into the real world.
*Start proofing outside in your yard/garden.
*Repeat all the steps you’ve learnt so far BUT now with added distractions.
*Practice this everywhere (preferably not near roads) until your dog comes back
every time.
*REMEMBER: always call your dog for Good things. Call him for his dinner, walks etc Don’t call him for things he doesnt like ie Vet visits, Dog wash etc. In these times, go and get him…. go to him.
TIPS TO IMPROVE THE RECALL
*Dont just call your dog back at the end of the walk, when you’re going to clip his
lead on & go home. Why would he come back if you’re intending to spoil his fun?
*Call him 30/40 times each walk, just to give him a treat or a game & then send
him off again.
*When you’re calling him back at the end of your walk, dont wave your lead
around, put it behind your back.
*BIG TIP! When you call your dog back to you, slip your fingers inside his collar
before you give him the treat so he doesnt grab the treat and run off.
DONT BE BORING
One of the biggest problems owners have when recalling outdoor is that they’re boring. Look from your dogs point of view: the world is an exciting place full of smells, sights, and things that need chasing. And then theres YOU! plodding around being boring. No wonder your dog doesnt want to come back to you.
The secret to a good RECALL is keeping your dogs attention on you (most of the time). This is THE most important part of having a good RECALL. Once hes wondered off to explore far more interesting things than you, you’re fighting a losing battle. YOU MUST BE THE MOST INTERESTING THING OUT THERE!!
Take a toy your dog loves, have some high value treats in your pocket and be FUN!! RUN around, hide behind trees, be unpredictable. In short:
be an owner that your dog really wants to be around.
PROBLEM SOLVING
If you have a dog that just wont come back to you, think about what breed you have? Hounds, Terriers etc are notoriously difficult to recall for whom a good scent or the sight of a cat is enough to render them totally deaf to you.
Sometimes nothing can provide more excitement than the thrill of the chase.
Dont set him up to fail. Dont call him at times when you know he wont pay attention: ie talking to other dogs, investigating a good smell etc. Only call him when you know he’s likely to listen and at times you know you can insist on it.
NEVER chase your dog, no matter how tempting it is. This turns into a ‘catch me‘ game & your dog will happily play this game. If anything, run in the opposite direction so your dog chases you! Always reward him for coming back (even if its a little slow)… Dont punish him… why should he come back if he’s going to get into trouble?
ALTERNATIVES:
If you have a problem dog that just refuses to come back, the sad fact is you may have to always put your dog on a long line or an extending lead and reel him in. We use these long dog leads (3mtr to 11 mtr) from Blackdog Label with our Dog Daycare service at the beach, so the dog feels free but you still have total control of him and you have peace of mind.
