Dog tick tock
Whilst paralysis ticks are in full force from Spring to Autumn in southern areas of Australia, they can be found most of the year round up here in sunny Qld. Usually the rainfall from the previous year determines how heavy the tick season is. Warmer and wet winters encourage more ticks in the next year. You need to be especially vigilant if you live in or near bushland as ticks live on native animals, birds and reptiles.
The most effective measure to avoid tick paralysis is daily examination is necessary and can equate to some lovely together time for you and your pooch. Speak to your vet about the type of products available for tick prevention but remember that no single method is 100% effective. If your dog has long hair make sure you use your fingers to feel through the coat. You may even want to consider clipping during the hotter months. If you find a tick, there may be more than one so please keep looking. Your dog may have had a tick which has fallen off. Where they have previously attached, ticks leave a patch of skin red, raised and hardened. Often with a crater like hole in the middle.
Some ticks are harmless. The paralysis tick has a greyish colour. Jump on the internet to check out some imagery. If your dog has symptoms of tick paralysis seek veterinary help and do not offer food or water as the dogs airway may be compromised.
