Dog Minder or Minder Dog

Wondering about who is the best person to mind our livestock?  Sometimes a dog (or bitch) who is the right man for the job.

The beautiful Maremma Sheepdog has excelled at this position for centuries now.

Known also as Marammano’s they are indigenous to Italy but you’ll find them watching over sheep, goats and the like all over the world.  I saw some minding a herd out in St. George.  These dogs are extremely protective of their stock but also make great companion dogs as long as they are provides the wide spaces they need.  Check out images of these beauties with their fluffy white faces on the internet.  Of course there are many breeds successfully used for guardians or protectors.  The most effective way to train them for this purpose is to introduce them at a very young age to the flock so that they begin to bond with the animals they will eventually protect.
