How did this dog protect 1000’s of air passengers?
Traverse City, Michigan USA is the home of the Cherry Capital Airport. This year they have sadly said farewell and paid tribute to a very special dog called Piper. For three years Piper’s owner and handler Brian Edwards worked at the airport where Piper scared off any birds or wildlife which pose a safety threat to aircraft. Brian said the airport was like their second home and Piper was so good at his job that during work on and around the runways, he chased off over 8000 feathered hazards. He patrolled nearly 2000 miles whilst working appox. 6000 hours. Birds get used to the sounds of aircraft or shotgun blanks over time and become comfortable at the airport but when a dog takes chase they follow their flight instinct.
As well as keeping the runways clear, Piper would detect the furry creatures that attract birds of prey such as rodents or ground hogs. Come rain, snow or shine Piper was out there doing just what he was born to do… run and chase. Working dogs find a job thrilling and Piper couldn’t wait to start work each day.
He also loved meeting staff and other folks working at the airport. Occasionally you could catch a glimpse of him in a helicopter, posing for a photograph or other times he was just a ‘blur of fur’ on a mission. Once Piper sustained a fracture causes whilst chasing a snowy owl. Mild revenge was taken in the form of a cartoon pic of a snowy owl being applied to Piper’s leg cast with the letters ‘Wanted’. Early 2018, Piper tragically lost his battle with prostrate cancer but he will be well remembered for his great service to humans.
This dog was nothing less than legendary. 95,000 Instagram followers can’t be wrong. Like to see him in action and see just how ‘badass’ he looks in goggles? Check out the link below…
