Canine Custody
I was amused when someone recently described an episode of Judge Judy where a couple needed to determine who would get custody of their husky. It’s a topic I hadn’t thought too much about but this dilemma must happen a lot.
As some courts are not too fussed about deciding on the custody of pets it would be well advisable to make an agreement (and sign it if necessary) before it gets that far. Judge Judy eventually asked the couple to take some time out to talk about a few things. She highlighted that the decision should be based on what is best for the dog. Luckily after some heart to heart discussion, one party agreed that the dog should stay with the other and the problem was solved.
For some families with children a dog can be sorely missed and often times it is the adult with the most flexible work/time arrangement and the most space who can provide the best for the animals exercise needs provided they also have the finances to cover the cost of the dogs care. Naturally if one party owned the dog before meeting the other person, the dog is theirs however in a court some folks may provide information about who has delivered most of the care including visits to the vet.
