Please be Pavo’ Aware due to recent spike
Check your dog’s vaccinations regardless of age…
Canine Parvovirus is highly contagious and results in infectious gastrointestinal illness. In 2020 Veterinarians just reported their worst April on record for Parvo and Animal Emergency Services vets have announced they’ve treated 40 cases across Brisbane, when their total for the whole of 2019 was 58. This illustrates that dog owners need to be vigilant against this potentially deadly disease. Parvo attends to appear in clusters. Recently cases have appeared in Springfield, Redbank Plains, Park Ridge, Kingston and Jimboomba.
Parvovirus is easily preventable by staying up to date with your veterinarian recommended vaccinations. If you are uncertain, do check with your vet. Though puppies between six weeks and six months of age are most at risk, dogs of all ages can contract parvovirus. The reason puppies are more susceptible to death is because of their lesser-developed immune systems.
Parvo is commonly spread through canine stools or vomit and can be transported via floor surfaces, dog equipment, bowls, beds, shoes and even the hands or clothes of humans. It can live in the ground for several months and has the potential to kill in as little as 2 days. There is no cure for Parvovirus but testing is easy. Aggressive, early treatment is required. Symptoms can include fever or low body temperature, vomiting, bloody diarrhea, bloating, lethargy, loss of appetite and dehydration however not all dogs exhibit signs. In addition to the dehydration, the intestines and immune system is severely compromised. Bone marrow suppression and inflammation of the heart can occur.
It has been suggested one reason for the spike could be due to the increase in pet ownership during Covid 19. Please be sure to check your dog’s vaccination record, spread the word to fellow dog parents and follow the recommendations of your trusted vet.
