Feeling a little anxious about flying?
There are many of us stressed at the airport and what could be nicer than to ‘de-stress’ with a pooch by our side. Not all of us are flying enthusiasts and some people experience an array of physical symptoms including breathlessness and even panic attacks. Travelling can also be stressful for passengers having to fly for tough reasons such as attending a funeral, having to relocate or just an arduous journey with extended time between connecting flights.
PUP’s (Pets Unstressing Passengers) is a program launched at Los Angeles airport, which is working to create a more relaxed atmosphere as they calm the nerves of travellers. These furry volunteers of many shapes and sizes can be found in the airport with their owners/handlers as part of the PUP’s program. You can find them at LAX airport 7 days a week roaming the terminal board gates. Since the inception of the program another 56 airports have joined in with similar programs. You’ll see a range of breeds; anything from poodles to wolfhounds and everything in between, all bringing their own unique appeal.
A set criterion has to be met by dog and handler in order to begin participating in PUP’s. Once approved, the branding appears on a special vest are worn by the dogs and on the clothing of their owners to help identify them to others. They work for a two-hour shift, once a week. Owners also help passengers with questions and directions in finding their way around. The handlers attend community events that help to promote PUP’s.
The beautiful hound featured in the photo is at Syracuse. Many thanks to our valued client who kindly provided the image and writes ‘these dogs stay within the airport and stay with passengers who are nervous flyers until the time they board’.
