A dogs loss
Studies of animal brains reveal they can experience emotional thoughts. Along with us humans, pets can mourn too. If your dog is experiencing the loss of a human, another canine, companionship or bond there are a few things you can try.
If your dog is grieving please continue giving him the same leadership as before and resist the temptation to ‘baby’ him through the experience. Smothering him with affection may only cause his situation to feel less stable. Keep the rules as before.
Provide plenty of stimulation in the way of games and exercise so you can keep him engaged and interested. This will help both of you to stay on track. Teaching a new task or trick is helpful.
Walks and being attached to you by the leash are good for your bond so get moving. Plenty to see and smell means a break away or a change from the environment to which the sadness it related.
