A Cool Area for your Dog
It is important that your dog has enough shade to rest in at this time of year. It’s the afternoon sun in Queensland that’s the killer and therefore you should make sure that a shady spot is provided for your dog on the eastern side of your house, so that the house itself provides shade for your dog. So keep in mind, your Dog’s Kennel & dog beds placed on the western side of your house are nothing but hot boxes.
The coolest area in your home for your dog is underneath the house. If you have a Queenslander or Colonial house, they provide just the right cool spot for a dog’s afternoon nap. If you have a patio, like me, hose the area down a couple of times a day. This will also provide a cool undercover area for your dog to rest. Now is a good time to bring out the clam/shell as well. Fill it up with water and this allows your dog to stand in it or sit in it. You can splash water over your dog anytime you feel he’s getting overheated. It’s quick & easy. The shell also provides an alternative drinking area for your dog.
Place your dog’s water bowls (more than one if possible) in the shaded areas of your home so that they remain cool. You can also use ice-cubes to keep the water cool.
