How did a homeless GSP give a new owner his life back?
At the age of 16, Jeremy Medlock was diagnosed with a cancerous tumour in his leg. Treatment and surgery followed and it wasn’t long until Jeremy was experiencing bouts of depression and anxiety. He went on to complete his degree in animal and veterinarian bioscience but once graduated, began to suffer a nervous breakdown. Jeremy, who was a confident and energetic man then in his 20’s, began experiencing difficulty just getting through the day. His condition propelled him into increasing isolation and he was unable to cope with daily tasks we take for granted such as going to the supermarket. In time, he could no longer work at the animal shelter where he had a job, due to diminished effectiveness.
This was when a very special puppy came into Jeremy’s life. Frankie was a dumped German shorthaired pointer from the animal rescue work (a GSP needing some TLC). She was being fostered by Jeremy and gave him a reason to get up in the morning. The time, exercise and stimulation Frankie needed served as a vehicle to get Jeremy out of the house and before too long, both of their lives had turned around. Jeremy knew the responsibilities required when caring for a dog and that Frankie was so dependent on him. The shift resulted in Jeremy seeking out a psychologist and the road to recovery began.
Since, Frankie has been trained as a psychiatric assistance dog and Jeremy has forged ahead with his life, completing more study at university. His beloved Frankie has been there through the whole journey, attending appointments and lectures too. Jeremy couldn’t be prouder when he sees Frankie wearing her assistance dog uniform. Together, this man and his dog are the quintessential team.
