The Secret Life of Sea Wolves
Imagine a wolf that has not only found a successful way to live in harmony with the sea, but who’s body type has also adapted.
British Columbia’s spectacular remote coast in Canada is home to such a wolf and photographer Ian McAllister has been amongst the thick of it taking splendid images displayed in National Geographic.
Forget deer for dinner… these canines are feasting on a seafood buffet, clams, barnacles, roe laden kelp and washed up whale carcasses.
Poop is laid with purpose and often at the intersection of two trails. The make-up of these are also vital clues into the wolves’ lives and are collected with relish by those who study them.
The sea wolf has evolved with morphologic differences to his inland relatives including a smaller body. He tends to be more of a beachcomber than a forest dweller. Wolves have been hunted and nearly wiped out in some regions but here, it is safer and with the lack of roads and humans these beautiful animals have flourished. They swim from island to island if need be and tend to be breeding with their own kind.
