The Long-Line to Doggy Freedom
For those wanting to exert their dogs energy but not having the advantage of a fenced area, a long line can be a great way to provide a little freedom whilst maintaining safety.
Perhaps you are down at a local park, which is not a designated off-leash area. Your dog needs to remain on leash but maybe you are not fit enough to keep up with him. A long-line will allow him to work off steam, sniff about or have a game of fetch and you still have the control of being able to keep him away from other folks. Doing this before you start the longest leg of your walk will make a difference once his initial energy has been burned off. (We do not recommend retractable long leads).
You can find the longer dog and horse training leads up to around 10m in length or join a few together to create a large freedom field. If you plan on doing this, gradually build up to the length you want to give. This way your dog will learn how far he can go. You don’t want him to fun full speed only to be jerked off his feet at the end of the line. Keep a close eye so he’s not tangling up bystanders or himself. Long pants can help you avoid a friction burn if he decides to run around you.
If you are ever concerned about the strength of a clip on the lead we have found brass fittings or marine grade carabineers a great addition.
