Worried about adopting a dog?
Let us debunk a few common ‘tales’ you may have heard about shelter dogs.
Puppies are not necessarily easier to train as young dogs present their own challenges. If you are not going to have the time or patience to give effective house training consider a dog already house-trained. Older dogs are just as grateful for shelter and care as young dogs.
Rescued dogs are not necessarily emotionally unstable. A responsible shelter will discuss their suitability in depth and will be asking you a lot of questions to ensure your suitability as an owner. The last thing they want is to be re-homing the same dog over.
Use a bunch of sources when searching for a dog. Try shelters, and even ‘breed’ clubs sometimes have their own re-homing section. If you are looking for a specific breed you may obtain one from a shelter at a fraction of the price you would pay if dealing directly with a breeder. Cross breeds have can have many health advantages.
All dogs need time to adjust to a new environment. Whether that is from their old home to the rescue shelter or from the shelter to their new forever home. The rules in the new home may be very different from whence they came. Sometimes this can be mistaken for being unruly but with patience, they will soon catch on.
