Dog broken free?

If your dog has ever broken free in the great outdoors due to equipment failure or otherwise you’ll know the fright it can give you.  Especially if there’s traffic about.  If you don’t have a perfect recall and there are oh so many interesting things to investigate other than you, here are a few things you can try.

Most dogs will simply outrun you if you try to chase them.  If you’ve established your dog is playing ‘keep-away’ from you, just getting down low can invoke his curiosity.

So far I’ve had a dog come to me by simply getting down on the ground.  She saw me do something unusual and came to investigate.  Even running in the other direction can work.  That’s right, making a crazy sound to grab their attention and running the other will often get the better of their desire to chase.  Lying on the ground or curling into a ball can have the same effect.  Experiment when you are at home sometime in the safety of your yard.  One friend captured a stray loose dog by merely opening the car door and…in he went.
