Safety for kids around dogs
Dogs provide so much to our families and can make such wonderful companions for kids. It is our responsibility to our children and dogs to teach kids how to behave around dogs in order to remain safe.
It’s not just enough to ‘tell’ someone (especially a young person) how to pet nicely or not to approach a tied dog. They need more than that. Learning needs to happen at level appropriate for the child and describing real life body language before letting the child interact with the dog can help cement the learning.
Check out www.doggonesafe.com for inspiration and ideas. This site has a number of helpful images and videos to educate recognizing between what is a happy dog and what is a dog under stress.
Consider checking with your child’s school whether any dog bite prevention education is on their agenda. It could mean saving the life of a child and or a dog.
