Retiring military dogs
This year The Seattle Times reported that the American Humane Association is requesting a bill be passed that retiring military dogs should move back into civilian life with their former handlers being given the first opportunity to adopt them.
Some dogs and their handlers have survived harrowing events together in wartime. The current figures are…an average of 150-200 service members lives saved by each war dog. When it’s a life and death situation strong bonds form between handler and dog. Some dogs have made multiple tours.
The group in favour argues that the dogs should be given the same benefits as their fellow humans who have served in the military. (Masen photographed here is not a military dog but he salutes those who are).
