Scent Mingling
Mixing scents in a family can help if you are introducing a baby or another dog. The idea behind it is to help everyone ‘mingle’ from the dogs point of view and to indicate that we are all part of one pack before they even see each other.
A towel can be wiped on the hands of all family members and the new baby. Then give the dog a rub down with the towel. Even a washcloth or sock will do. Likewise, if a new dog is coming, after the family puts their scent onto the towel give both dogs a rub with the towel. It should go back and forth so that both dogs will have the scent of the other dog on them.
The same principle can be used if you are introducing a cat and a dog although all introductions are a lot more involved than this blog. Scent mingling is only a small part of the plan and is a subtle way to get them accustomed before their initial meeting.
