Dogs and Obesity
Did you know that overweight dogs have a shorter and poorer quality of life than their healthy weight counterparts? While there are several factors which contribute to a dogs weight, in 95% of cases calorie intake is the culprit. Some risks include respiratory & heart disease, diabetes and joint problems.
A dogs waist should be visible from the side and top view. If you can’t feel your dogs ribs it is probably overweight. Your vet can let you know your dogs optimal weight based on gender, age and breed. 20% above the ideal weight would be considered obese.
Consider weighing your dogs meal portions if you have him on a program. It’s easy to love our dogs to death, especially when it comes to treats and snacks.
