Dogs in Ancient Times
Since before humans communicated with writing, dogs have been a part of our history. Egyptian tombs have revealed paintings and sculptures depicting dogs dating back to around 3000B.C.
In Egypt, Persia and Greece dogs were held in high esteem and it was not unusual for them to be mummified and buried in family tombs. Such a ritual, it was believed assisted the spirits journey to the afterlife and sometimes the animals were buried along with their masters in the masters coffin.
Dogs were used as pets and companions as well as in law enforcement. It was common for grieving owners in Egypt to shave their eyebrows to mark the death of their dogs.
The early Romans replicated canine beauty in murals and mosaics.
